A Comment About Garage Door Recycling

Garage Door Sections to be Recycled
Garage Door Sections to be Recycled

Garage door systems in the homes we service contain a variety and volume of metals. They are manufactured this way to maintain a durable and long lasting life but they eventually wear out and need replacing. Garage door recycling of old metal plays a big factor in our day to day operations.

Without exception garage door repair and replacements result in a lot of scrap metal. This metal consists of galvanized steel but can also contain regular steel, copper, zinc, aluminum and brass, wood and may other components when replaced cannot be reused in a garage door system.

We live in a very disposable nation and a lot of this scrap material is landing in land fills.

This was also true for us a Covenant Garage Doors.  All the old garage door parts were brought back to our location where it was put into large dumpsters with absolutely no thought into the recycling aspect and all this material was hauled off to the dump. In 2010 we took a long look at starting a recycling program. This started with a online search of metal recycling companies, then scrap metal buyers and contacting these companies to learn about how the process works, how they prefer to receive the material and what happens to the material after they acquire it. After all, we did not want the metal to make one big circle from us, to them and to the land fill. Next we talked to other industries who had established a recycling program and learned that there can be significant amount of money made in recycling waste materials.

Since we are a small company, starting a recycling program would be relatively simple and would not involve a large start up cost. A large utility trailer was acquired, several buckets and an ample amount of space were set aside to sort and store the scrap as it came in.

As the garage doors and openers are disassembled and removed from customers homes, they are transported back to our location where the material is sorted by type. Larger metal door sections are stacked to the side, other metals like track, cable assemblies, old springs, openers and bigger pieces are placed on the trailer. Copper wire is removed from the openers and placed into buckets as well as the smaller metal pieces like rollers, hinges, cable drums, nuts, bolts, and screws.   Wood door sections and paper, items which are bio degradable, are placed into large dumpsters where the waste companies haul them off.  Periodically, all this scrap material is stacked onto the trailer and hauled to the recycler to be purchased. The recycler then in turn sells all the scrap metal to larger rendering plants that melt the metal down into large “slugs” which are transported to various manufacturing plants throughout the country, where the “slugs” are turned into various products and resold to the consumer.

Since starting this program in early 2010, Covenant Garage Doors estimates that we have recycled anywhere from 10-12 tons of metal. Metal that is kept out of our land fills and is turned back into useful products that we use every day. This is doing our part of being a greener, more responsible member of our community.

Garage Doors, That’s All We Do, Nothing Else.

While I was at one my suppliers the other day, another garage door company pulled up and I noticed that they had changed the color and lettering for their company on their truck. Closer inspection showed that they had also changed their company name and now were also offering garage doors,  heating and air conditioning as well as electrical services.

Garage doors and heating and air and electrical.

Wow.

When you have been doing this as many years as I have, you get to see a lot and now I can say I think I have seen just about everything.

Last year I made a similar blog post about companies of ever sort also doing garage doors. Siding companies, fence companies, plumbers, you name it. I mentioned it then and I will say it again, these companies are so involved, are managing so much, that quality and experience start to wane if ever it was there and in the end you the home owner is the one that suffers with poor or sloppy work being done.

Garage door repair is specialized and requires attention that only comes from experience. This is the reason that Covenant Garage Doors made the commitment  to only repair garage doors and garage door openers.  This is a great advantage for the homeowner as when we arrive at their home their problem is our only attention and we put all of our experience to solving their problem as well as keep up with product updates and negotiating with manufacturers.

When homeowners call Covenant Garage Doors they can be assured that they are getting a company that is devoted to their repair and nothing else. Call Us at 770-720-7828 or visit our website and book an appointment online and we will come take care of your garage door needs!

The Use of Wooden Garage Doors

Wood-Carriage Garage Doors

If you have the mindset that if you’ve seen one garage door you seen them all, you may want to reconsider that point of view. The reality is that garage doors are not only utilitarian, but with the various different options for garage doors, you can open an entirely new aspect to your homes decor that many people fail to realize. This is typically the case when people consider using wood garage doors.

One of the most beneficial aspects to wood garage doors is the custom nature of their design. Not every home will come equipped with a standard size garage door. In addition, if you have made improvements or added new dimensions to your garage space, a standard size door that once fit on your garage may not be adequate for your garage any longer. Regardless of what size door you need, custom wood garage doors may be your best option.

When you consider wooden garage doors, you may not quite understand the amount of options you will have in terms of its construction. While it will have the solid and decorative look of wood, there is far more to the construction of these types of garage doors than simply a large wooden panel.

There are wooded garage doors that have multiple layers and some of those layers can include steel frames for better rigidity and others include areas for insulation to help the doors offer better protection from the weather as well as better sound absorption. The choice as to what type of door will work best for you will depend upon your needs for insulation as well as your budget.

When it comes to the type of wood that is used in customized wood garage doors, there are multiple different options. For example, a common wood that is used for garage door inlays and base material is oak. However you can choose from walnut, hemlock, fir, cedar as well as redwood, just to mention a few.

Lastly, you want to consider the design of the doors. You can choose standard carriage doors with multiple designs and patterns that can be built or you can choose standard panel construction for your wooden garage doors. These panels can be laid out in a short design or long design, depending on your particular design preferences. You will also have the option of choosing windows to be included in your door and these windows can be very small bordering the top of the garage door or you can choose a more extensive use of windows in your garage door design. In addition to this, you’ll also have the option of decorative hardware to finish out your customized garage door design.

Make Sure the Garage Door is Open Before Backing Out!

We wont say who but we’ve had to service a number of these in the past. Everyone has one of those days where they wake up and time seems to be working against them. Maybe the alarm clock didn’t go off or you just didn’t have the energy or motivation to will yourself out of bed. Whatever the case may be the result is that you end up rushing in order to get where you need to be on time. Unfortunately, it is when individuals are in a rush to get out the door that they tend to make mistakes or forget about important things.

Imagine your alarm clock not going off and you waking up with 15 minutes to get ready and be out the door in order to get to your job on time. You hop out of bed, you furiously brush your teeth and clean up over the sink, throw some clothes on, and you grab some breakfast as you race out the door; sound familiar? You finally make to your car and start the engine. Looking at the clock and realizing you should have left several minutes ago you think to yourself that if you floor it maybe you can get there on time. Without giving it a second thought you put the car in reverse and quickly back out. BAM! You slam right into your garage door! Now, not only are you not going to make it to work on time but you are going to have to foot the bill for at least a garage door panel replacement if not the entire garage door itself!

Now, if you are lucky maybe you will not have completely totaled your garage doors; maybe you just need the garage door springs replaced. Paying for garage door springs replacement is a lot more appealing than paying for a full garage door repair. Once you get the garage door repair needs sorting out, you may end up having to pay a serious bill to get your car fixed as well.

The unfortunate moral of the story is that you could have saved yourself a lot of money if you would have just taken the time to use your garage door opener and looked back to make sure the door was open before rushing to your job.

If you ever have one of those days like the one described in the story above Covenant Garage Doors is here to help. Getting Your Garage Doors Ready for Spring

Now that the winter weather is on its last legs, it is time to start the spring tradition of getting your home in order. Not only do you have to do a bit of cleaning around the home, but you also need to look into painting the outside, and making improvements to your yard. With all of that in mind, spring is also the best time to inspect your garage doors to make sure that they are ready for the spring. Here is a list of things to look for when you are Getting Your Garage Doors Ready for Spring.

Check The Tracks, Rollers And Hinges
There are a lot of moving parts on a garage door, from the chain that moves it up and down, to the rollers that bring it up, to the hinges that allow it to bend when it makes its way up or down. All of these items need to be inspected to make sure that they don’t just look worn, but that they are also doing everything that they are supposed to do. All it takes for one of these items to break or go off track for the entire system to not work.

Tighten All Of The Screws And Bolts
As with the moving parts of your garage door system, there are going to be a lot of screws and bolts that are going to need to be looked at. Not only do you need to make sure that everything is still in place, but you also want to tighten each one as you inspect them. A simple tightening will go a long way in making sure they stay in place.

Apply Lubrication, Liberally
Since the last time you inspected it, your garage door has been using the same lubrication to keep it moving correctly. The tracks should be properly lubricated once more with garage door lubricant spray or powdered graphite so that they can keep sliding the way they need to. Stay away from a wet lubricant as it can easily attract dirt and grime.

Make Sure It Passes The Eye Test
One of the best ways to make sure that your garage doors are properly working is to closely look at them. If something looks strange or askew, those are probably areas that are going to cause you the most problems, thus they need to be fixed or replaced. While you are going to take a lot of close looks at parts of the overall system, it is also important to look at it as a whole, as it may allow you to see larger issues that you will only be able to see if you are making sure that it passes the eye test, so to say. This is also a good time to look at the outside of the door. Remember, curb appeal is important to the overall look of your home. If you have a wood garage door, now is a good time to paint it. Wood doors weather quicker than metal doors, so applying a coat of paint to them every 3-5 years will keep them looking good.

Lastly, If It Is Just Worn Out, replace It
Spring time is the time that most people replace their door. Updating the curb appeal to their homes is the best way to increase value or resale ability and replacing the garage door in one of the biggest ways this is done.

Getting Accurate Google Searches for Garage Door Companies – Part 2

In my last blog post, I gave you general guide lines for doing accurate searches on the internet for locating a garage door company in your area. Today, I want to focus on sorting out the results that the search engines present to you so that you are choosing a good reputable, local company.

To quickly summarize, you are needing to get your garage door repaired and you sit at your computer and have keyed in what you need and where you are located into the search engine. In this example you are looking for, garage door repair in Marietta Ga. You are then presented what the search engine believes are your needs based on what you keyed in and a list of criteria that the search engine requires of the companies that are listing their business with the search engine.

Again, in the example since Google controls most of the search results on the internet, I will focus on how they display results to you. As you look at the page, you are presented with results that at first can be rather confusing. In the page structure, the very top of the page are 3 listings that are in a high lighted area. To the very right side of the page are a list of 8 results going vertical on the page. These 3 at the top and the ones on the right side are “paid” or “sponsored” listings. These are companies who pay a fee to be listed in these positions. Most of these companies are not truly local companies.

In the center portion of the page are 10 to 14 listings that are called organic listings or free listings for the companies. These listings are the ones that Google is supposed to have stringent rules for the companies to appear. As you look, you will see that the first 3 or 4 listings look differently than the rest underneath them. These 3 to 4 are called places listings. These are companies that are supposedly are local business that have been verified to be truly local companies. These companies may not be truly local.

Underneath these are the other listings of companies based on your search terms you entered to look for a company. Each listing has different parts to give you a brief description of the company:

The top part that has blue lettering: This is what the company does based on what you keyed in. This can be the company name plus description and even the city.

Next should be the company URL or web address: This will be listed with smaller, green lettering. This will often times be the company name plus what the web page is showing. Google really has no way to control this part as these are often purchased by the companies from other places. Sometimes the URL can be what the company does and not who they are.

Next, Is a short description of what the company does: This can be broad and general and mostly is based on what the company is listing for that particular page that is listed.

As you look at these listings, focus on the ones that are the green URL listings as they are the company names and these mostly are the ones you want to make your selection from. Some of these are referral companies that are compiling listings of garage door companies and you have to go their web site and join them with a membership to see the listings.
If you will look at the ones that are the actual company names in the green lettered section then you pretty much are going directly to the actual company. There is a good chance that the companies listed are actual local companies.

In my next blog I am going to do something that is highly unusual and probably never done before. I am going to give you a list of the good garage door companies here in the Metro Atlanta area to make it easy for you to choose.

Getting Accurate Google Searches for Garage Door Companies – Part 1

Like they say “It’s nothing like it used to be in the good ‘ol days when you just picked up a phone book, looked for a company and the dialed the number.”

Phone books are pretty much obsolete and now we have the internet.

At first looking for something on the internet was simple. There were not that many places advertising online and there were only a few locations on the internet offering a way for people to easily locate a company for a particular service that they were looking for. Examples of this are Kudzu, Angies List.

Today almost all garage door companies in business are listing their businesses with a web site on the internet and on top of that there are countless places on the internet called “search engines” assisting people in their efforts to locate things and businesses on the internet. The top search engines are of course Google, Yahoo/Bing but there are hundreds of others like AOL, Lycos, All the Web, etc. Google is the largest and the one most commonly used and at last time I looked, controlled about 88% of the searches on the internet. For the sake of today’s post I will focus on Google.

Let’s say you woke up this morning, got ready to go to work and discovered that your garage door won’t open. You go back into your house and sit at your computer to start looking someone to come and repair it. The first thing you do is key into Google what is know as key words that briefly describe what you are looking for. In our example it will be garage door repair. This is what you type into the Google search box. Now, additionally, you will need to tell Google where you want to look for this. So, for this example, let’s say you live in Marietta Ga. You will type in the search box, garage door repair Marietta Ga. This tells Google what you are looking for and where you are. Google in turn will present to you a list of companies that are supposed to meet certain criteria for accuracy for you to choose.

If you know what is specifically what is wrong, say a broken spring, then you would type, garage door spring replacement Marietta Ga. If you are looking to replace your garage door then type, garage door replacement Marietta Ga. The key is to be brief, specific and include your location.

In my next blog, I will give you direction on how to choose the companies that are presented to you. Google has criteria and rules that companies should meet to be listed, however, some bad companies have learned to work around the rules to get ahead. I will tell you how to sort the bad companies out.

Make The Most of Your Garage Door Estimate

We know most folks these days live busy fast-paced lives and so every minute is precious. That is why we have compiled this list of things to help make the most out of your time spent while getting your garage door estimate.

1. Educate yourself. – Go to our website- https://www.covenantgaragedoors.com. We have links to many different garage door manufacturer’s websites. Study manufacturer’s websites, it is the key to knowing what’s available.

2.Know what styles you like. – After looking at the manufacturer’s websites, remember the things you liked- window patterns, door styles etc. Sharing these things with your garage door technician will help him narrow down the possibilities and find the perfect door for your home.

3.If you have some specifics in mind, don’t be afraid to say so.- Remember, you are going to be looking at this door for years to come, so make sure you are telling your garage door technician any specifics about what you are looking for in a garage door. We want you to be happy with your new garage door purchase!

4.Know what options are important to you and which ones aren’t a priority. – Windows versus no windows, insulated versus non-insulated, window inserts, color, etc. There are a whole bunch of different options to customize your garage door. Some things are going to be non-negotiable and therefore, necessary to your garage door purchase, but some things are just extras, so be sure to have an idea of what those non-negotiable things are.

5.Make sure you are in agreement with your spouse.- I can’t tell you how many times our tech shows up to a home to do a garage door estimate, and one spouse has no idea we are even scheduled to come out, much less that they are going to be replacing their garage door! So, as a courtesy to the company coming out, talk it over with whomever you are sharing the household decisions with so that everyone is on the same page. Also, make sure you discuss garage door options together both before the technician comes out to your home and after he leaves to make sure you both are in agreement about what kind of garage door you are looking to get.

6.Think about any other garage door opener work you are going to need and bring that up as well.- If you know you are going to need a new opener or opener repair, or there is some other garage door issue, let the tech know so he can price that for you as well. That way, the company can go ahead and plan for extra repair time if that is needed.

7.Be reasonable with price expectations. – In this economy everyone wants to make sure they are getting the best price possible. While this is to be expected, your local garage door company is not going to be in business long if they are always ‘giving away’ products. Understand that while we want to give you a good deal, we do have to make enough to be able to make good on warranties we are offering a couple of years from now. Rather than getting stuck on the issue of price, look for a company that offers quality products that hold up and continue to look great over time. That is where the real value lies. Which brings me to the next point…

8.Make sure the price you are quoted includes everything you will need in order to have the job completed correctly. – Does that door quote include hauling away the old door or is that going to be extra? Does the price include tax, labor and installation? Find out if the quote is for everything the job requires or you may be stuck paying for extra fees. Do yourself a big favor, too and get the estimate in writing -that way the price can’t be changed on you later.

9.Schedule the door estimate for when you have time to meet.- Most reputable door companies like Covenant Garage Doors & Openers will gladly schedule a time to meet with you that works with your schedule. Make sure when you set up an appointment you set up a time where you will have about an hour or so to devote to meeting with the garage door tech. That way there is plenty of time for the tech to go over the material, and answer any questions you may have.

10.Be punctual.- We at Covenant Garage Doors & Openers always strive to arrive to an appointment in a timely manner, so we hope our customers will do the same. The unforeseen can happen, but if something comes up and you are not able to keep an appointment time, please call our office and reschedule for another time.
